What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a specific technique that works on precise reflex points on the feet, based on the principle that these reflex points correspond to particular organs, glands and structures in the body. In stimulating these reflex points a state of deep relaxation is brought about, stimulating the body's own healing process and help the person return to a state of balance and well-being. Reflexology is a holistic, non-invasive therapy which addresses mental, physical and emotional health.

It is over 5,000 years old and has origins in China and Egypt, where pressure therapies were recognized to have therapeutic benefits and more importantly, help prevent disease. The oldest evidence of  Reflexology is an ancient Egyptian tomb painting dating to around 2330 BCE. This pictorial evidence was found in the tomb of the physician Ankhmahor at Saqqara.

Reflexology was not introduced to the Western World until the twentieth century, when the Americans began to develop zone therapy, which had been practiced by the Europeans as far back as the fourteenth century, into Reflexology as we know it today.

During a reflexology treatment, pressure is applied by a skilled qualified therapist to stimulate these points which improves blood and energy circulation, lymphatic drainage and ultimately a sense of relaxation, thus maintaining homeostasis (bodily systems remaining stable as they adjust to changing conditions).

Where there is inhibited functioning or disease, congestion will be found in the form of grainy crystal deposits. These deposits are caused by excess acidity in the bloodstream which increases  uric acid levels and forms calcium deposits at the nerve endings. They may feel tender, sensitive or painful and they can feel hard, tight or lumpy.

With reflexology, our aim is to break up these deposits so they can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and lymphatic system and then excreted by the body.

Reflexology helps to reduce stress and bring the body into a state of balance, or homeostasis. It primarily works by calming the body's stress response and promoting deep relaxation, which allows the body to restore and repair itself.

We now know that stress is the cause of 95% of Illness & Disease.

Reflexology works holistically on the whole body and mind reducing stress and inducing relaxation.

Therapy Details

The Reflexology Session

After an initial consultation the session begins with a relaxing Epsom salt foot spa, followed by the reflexology foot treatment. Reflexology treatments should be a minimum of one week apart, most client’s book fortnightly or monthly treatments. However, initially weekly sessions for 5-6 weeks have proven beneficial, then subsequent sessions fortnightly or monthly which helps to re-balance the systems of the body and mind. There is no obligation to book a course. A single session can be booked.

Reflexology Lymph Drainage

Louise also offers Reflexology Lymph Drainage as a stand-alone treatment or incorporated into a normal Reflexology session.

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is a reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet.

How It Works: RLD uses specific, light-to-medium pressure sequences exclusively on the feet to stimulate the lymphatic reflexes. This mimics the effects of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) body massage without directly touching painful or sensitive affected limbs.

While researched in cancer care, RLD is also useful with the following conditions:

  • Arthritis

  • Asthma

  • Eczema

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Fibromyalgia

  • ME

  • Sinus problems

  • Migraines

  • Headaches

  • Muscular tension

  • Aches and pains

  • Premenstrual Syndrome

Hot Stone Reflexology

The effects and potential benefits of hot stones include:

  • Heat penetrates to a much deeper level than finger pressure, reaching around 7cm into tissues. This brings about physiological changes as well as improving energy flow.

  • Improves blood circulation & lymphatic drainage.

  • Promotes the release & elimination of toxins.

  • Boosts immunity and the lymphatic function.

  • Relieves tension in connective tissues

  • It is warming, deeply relaxing & soothing helping to melt away any tension, anxiety or stress.

  • Reduces muscular tension

  • Helps to bring about a balance of body and mind.

The ancient healing art of stone therapy using various massage techniques and warm stones to relax the body at its deepest level and is effective in creating harmony and balance. The subtle energies of stones introduced into a treatment calm the senses, relax muscle tension and promote a meditative state.

The stones

The stones I use are basalt, a volcanic rock, which due to its high density retains heat well. In addition I also incorporate crystals such as Rose Quartz a stone of love which helps restore trust and harmony in relationships, encouraging unconditional love. Rose Quartz purifies and opens the heart at all levels to promote love, self-love, friendship, deep inner healing and feelings of peace. Stones are firstly used to massage the lower legs relieving any tension in the calf muscles and helping to enhance energy flow. Smaller stones are then used to work the reflex areas and points of the feet. The heat from the stones quickly opens the reflex pathways bringing about a much deeper level of relaxation than Reflexology alone.

Please ensure you wear loose trousers during the treatment to allow me to work the lower leg up to the knee. Due to the indepth cleansing procedure of my stones I am only able to book one client per day.
